cryoFIL® - cGMP cryovial filling platform

cryoFIL® is a cGMP-compliant cryovial filling platform designed to improve cell viability and maximise yield through automated filling and handling.

In the rapidly expanding cell and gene therapy (CGT) sector, many cryovial filling processes are still performed manually, which carries increased risk around contamination, dose variability and operator error. cryoFIL® replaces manual pipetting with a fully automated system that delivers consistent fills, minimising human intervention. The platform integrates seamlessly into existing workflows and is compatible with Controlled Rate Freezer (CRF) racks.

By standardising fill volumes, handling and limiting exposure time, cryoFIL® helps protect cell viability during cryopreservation. From small to large batch sizes - whether 10 or 1000 vials - we comply with current regulatory standards to offer a scalable solution for your cell therapy needs.

How does cryoFIL® work?

Cryovials are transferred from the rack to the filling module. Each vial is individually uncapped, filled and recapped before being returned to its original position in the rack. The rack can then be placed directly into the freezer, eliminating the need for further handling of the vials. This process maintains the integrity of your samples and reduces the risk of contamination.

Manual vs automated filling

Automated cryovial filling systems are engineered to dispense cell suspensions accurately under controlled conditions. In fact, automated cryovial filling systems can achieve fill accuracy of ±1% with 100% in-process verification.

Manual filling Automated filling
Operator-dependent Consistent dosing
Variable fill volumes Closed aseptic handling
Higher contamination risk Reduced human error
Slower throughput Scalable output

Sterility assurance

Our advanced aseptic design ensures that vials are opened for the shortest possible duration, and only exposed to 'first air', significantly reducing the risk of contamination.

Multi-format flexibility

Process multiple cryovial types seamlessly on the same platform, thanks to a modular design with quick swap change parts. Onboard recipe settings allow for rapid format adjustments, reducing downtime and enhancing operational efficiency. This versatility makes it easy to scale production while accommodating evolving process requirements.

Maximises cell yield

Maximise the number of in-spec fills with intelligent closed-loop filling, minimised hold-up volume, and a zero-loss priming sequence. Real-time 100% weight verification ensures precise dosing, helping to preserve valuable cell therapies.

Touch screen interface

A user-friendly, password-protected touchscreen interface provides intuitive control with multi-level user access. The system generates 21 CFR part 11 compliant batch reports.

FAQs

What is cryovial filling?
In simple terms, cryovial filling is putting a cell or therapy product into small vials designed to be frozen and stored. cryoFIL® is an automated system that helps do this more consistently and safely, so Cell & Gene Therapy manufacturers can reduce manual handling, lower contamination risk, and meet cGMP‑style standards.

How do you fill cryovials safely and accurately?
Cryovials are filled inside a controlled, clean environment so the product stays sterile and the right amount goes into each vial. cryoFIL® uses an intelligent closed‑loop fill process with real‑time 100% weight verification, giving typical accuracy of about ±1% for fills up to 5 ml, which helps keep vial‑to‑vial consistency high.

What size batches can a cryovial filling machine handle?
Some machines can fill anything from a small tray of vials right up to much larger production runs. cryoFIL® is scalable from small to large batches, usually around 10 to 1,000 vials, so it works for early R&D‑style work as well as later‑stage, higher‑volume production.

Can one machine fill different vial sizes?
Yes, some systems can be adapted so they handle different vial sizes on the same platform. cryoFIL® is compatible with 0.5–5 ml cryovials from major brands and uses a modular design with quick‑swap change parts so multiple formats can be run without needing a completely new machine.

How do you keep cryovials sterile during filling?
The vials are kept in a protected flow of clean air and opened only briefly to minimise contamination. cryoFIL® is built with an aseptic design so vials are open for the shortest possible time and exposed only to ‘first air’; it is normally used inside a Biosafety Cabinet (BSC), with isolator integration also available for higher‑grade protection.

How accurate are cryovial filling machines?
Good filling machines can hit the target volume very closely, with only a small variation between vials. cryoFIL® uses closed‑loop, sensor‑driven filling with continuous weight checks, achieving typical accuracy of ±1% for fills up to 5 ml, which supports consistent quality and helps meet regulatory expectations.

What support comes with a cryovial filling system?
After you install a filling system, you usually get ongoing help with training, maintenance, and troubleshooting. For cryoFIL®, this includes technical support, preventative maintenance, operator training, spare parts availability, and remote diagnostics so the system can keep running smoothly over the long term.
