You should have a passion for solving challenging technical problems. You are likely to be studying for a STEM/Engineering Degree (eg: Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Chemical Engineering, or Physics), but essentially you have developed a passion for software and coding. Most successful candidates are able to demonstrate coding of a Raspberry Pi or Arduino etc to control a real-world device. You should have a passion for solving challenging technical problems through coding. Typically, the placement is spent 50/50 office and workshop based. In the office it will involve preparing documentation for clients and coding the front ends of our machine control systems and also the control systems using structured text (For info: we use systems from Allen Bradley and Siemens or Zenon with Beckhoff’s TwinCat – don’t worry if this means nothing to you as we will provide training). In the workshop you will be debugging your code on real machinery. You will also be carrying out validation tests to prove the systems meets its requirements. Ideally but not essential you should have an interest in some of the following:
• Software and coding for automation and control/software systems
• Robotics
• Control Systems
• Electrical Systems
